In past decades, when the Mac OS commanded a much smaller market share than it does today, there were sometimes compatibility issues with Apple machines and third-party devices such as Canon printers. Due to the widespread use and growing market share of Apple computers today, though, most printer manufacturers make efforts to provide native support for Apple machines and updated drivers as the Mac OS matures. There is little risk that a new Canon printer for your business or office will not be able to work with a MacBook, and even an older Canon printer may have options that allow it to work with your MacBook.

Download Canon Mac OS X Drivers

The best solution to ensure your Canon printer will work with your MacBook is to visit the Canon website and search for the Mac OS X driver for your printer. You should not have much trouble finding a driver since Canon has support for some printers even back to Mac OS 8. With the manufacturer's driver installed, you can be sure that you can take advantage of more of the advanced features of your printer and that it will be useful to a wider range of applications on your machine.

Native Support of Printers

In some cases you may find that your MacBook already provides native support for the Canon printer. If so, all or many of the features will function even without downloading and installing a Canon Mac OS X driver. This is worth a try if for some reason you cannot install a driver on the machine. Most newer versions of Mac OS X and newer Canon printers will work well together out of the box and may not need much help.

Basic Printing Support

Depending on the age of your Canon printer or the age of your MacBook's OS version, you may be in a situation in which no driver is available. In this case you can try to connect the printer anyway and you may be surprised that it will work in at least a basic mode. Macs can sometimes use printers for basic black and white printing even with no driver if the printer supports some basic modes. This is not always guaranteed to work, but if you absolutely need to print something and if you can tolerate less than perfect page formatting, this may work for you.

Printer Network Sharing

Another option you can consider is connecting to the printer if it can be shared over the network through a Windows machine or through a WLAN printer server. In some cases this connection method may work since you may be able to take advantage of some standard network protocols that can give you some basic printing support from the Canon.
